In Kali Linux, when starting OpenVAS, I receive these messages. What is PID file /run/openvasmd.pid and why can’t it locate it?
Mar 13 15:46:07 kali systemd[1]: Starting Open Vulnerability Assessment System Manager Daemon… Mar 13 15:46:07 kali systemd[1]: openvas-manager.service: Can’t open PID file /run/openvasmd.pid (yet?) after start: No such file or directory Mar 13 15:46:08 kali systemd[1]: Started Open Vulnerability Assessment System Manager Daemon.
Also, I guess related to this, when I start a scan, it stops at 1%
My OpenVAS version is 9.0.3kali1
Also even though the last message above says Daemon was started, I don’t see it when executing ps.
You could have a look into your openvasmd.log file why the openvasmd daemon refusing to start. The location depends on your setup, have a look at e.g. /var/log/openvas or similar path to find it.
As a short additional note:
When choosing the category for a topic please try to have a look at the category description for each category first:
Thanks for the tip. The openvasmd.log file shows no errors.
However the gsad.log file shows these errors. (Not sure what “gsad” is) or how to correct these errors.
Any advice will be welcome.

More info…
This message appears in the openvasmd.log file when attempting to run a scan.
md main:WARNING:2019-03-14 11h11.41 UTC:3460: openvas_scanner_read: Failed to read from scanner: Connection reset by peer
This happens when I get the 1% Stopped Message
This looks like the main issue and the “Can’t open PID file” is unrelated to the scans stopped at 1%. There is an existing thread about this message available which i’m linking below. For now i would like to close this thread as a duplicate, please follow up in this thread in the following thread if you have further questions:
