I’m new to Greenbone systems. I’m just extremely frustrated that there isn’t a how-to anywhere that helps set up gvm-11 on Ubuntu 18.04/20.04, etc. The closest thing to a working how-to is: https://kifarunix.com/install-and-setup-gvm-11-on-ubuntu-20-04/ but it just doesn’t fix the socket issue. BRicks is a champion, trying his best to resolve all the issues that pop up but getting a decent how-to that actually works is non existent.
I’m not a developer and many of these how-to’s expect you to be one to understand compiling, etc and many of the fixes expects you to know a little coding. I’m sure that many people, including myself with no experience with these systems, have been thrust into getting OpenVAS / GVM to work and find it extremely intimidating.
I have tried many of these how-to’s out there but it just doesn’t work and then you get people who post fixes I’m sure many people out there would 1st want to test with the free version (GVM) before actually wanting to invest in a very expensive and supported system.
I’m sorry if I stepped on people’s toes but it’s so very frustrating!
If you need a version to test our product either get an evaluation key or just use our community edition as @ckuerste already wrote.
By using the Greenbone Source Edition you have the full power but also the full pain of free software. You have to figure out how to build each component, to setup them and to connect them. This is how free software works. Otherwise you would have to pay somebody for this. As you can imagine our business is to sell our appliances and services. This funds the free software development.

@_ad I have just installed it as per the install how-to (with some minor tweaks like installing python 3.7, etc) you’ve given me and it works!! Even the task wizard functionality works that never worked with the kifarunix.com guide. Mind you, I did try installing the sadsloth guide previously on Ubuntu 20.04 but this install works perfectly fine on 18.04. @_ad@bricks@ckuerste Thank you kindly for your support, I appreciate it immensely!!
