Setting Up the Greenbone Security Manager TRIAL (GSM TRIAL) Virtual Machine

Prerequisites and Introduction

  • Download the latest GSM TRIAL image here
  • Compatibility: Oracle VirtualBox version 6.1 or higher
  • Minimum requirements: 2 CPUs, 5 GB RAM

The GSM TRIAL serves as a quick and easy trial option for the Greenbone Professional Edition on Microsoft Windows, Linux and macOS.

  • By default, the GSM TRIAL uses the Greenbone Community Feed instead of the more extensive Greenbone Security Feed. An evaluation key for the Greenbone Security Feed may be requested here.

  • Feed updates are available on a regular basis, but the GSM TRIAL itself cannot be updated. The commercial Greenbone Professional Edition solutions can be updated seamlessly and include access to the Greenbone Security Feed.

  • Access to the Greenbone Networks Support is only available for owners of a Greenbone Security Feed access key. By default, there is no support included in the GSM TRIAL!

  • Advanced features, e.g., TLS certificate management, schedules, alerts, integrated backups, master-sensor functionality, VLANs, network namespaces and air-gap support, are not included in the GSM TRIAL. All features mentioned are available in the Greenbone Professional Edition solutions which can be requested from Greenbone Networks as evaluation units.

Setting up the GSM TRIAL using Oracle VirtualBox

Note: Oracle VirtualBox 6.1 or later is required for the new EFI boot mode! EFI must be activated in VirtualBox, see step 13!

  1. Open VirtualBox.

  2. Click “New”.

  3. Enter the name of the virtual machine in the input box “Name”.

  4. Select “Linux” in the drop-down list “Type” and “Other Linux (64-bit)” in the drop-down list “Version” and click “Next >”.

  5. Set the memory to 5120 MB and click “Next >”.

  6. Select the radio button “Create a virtual hard disk now” and click “Create”.

  7. Select the radio button “VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk)” and click “Next >”.

  8. Select the radio button “Dynamically allocated” and click “Next >”.

  9. Set the size to 18 GB and click “Create”.

  10. Right click the newly created virtual machine and select “Settings”.

  11. Select “System > Motherboard” and deactivate the checkbox “Floppy”.

  12. Select “PS/2 Mouse” in the drop-down list “Pointing Device”.

  13. Activate the checkbox “Enable EFI (special OSes only)”.

  14. Select “System > Processor” and set the number of processors to 2.

  15. Select “Audio” and deactivate the checkbox “Enable Audio”.

  16. Select “USB” and deactivate the checkbox “Enable USB Controller”.

  17. Select “Network > Adapter 1” and select “Bridged Adapter” in the drop-down list “Attached to”.

    Note: Make sure that the adapter has network and Internet access.

  18. Select “Storage”.

  19. Select the previously created VMDK and activate the checkbox “Solid-state Drive”.

  20. Select “Empty”, click Screenshot from 2019-12-31 14-38-43 and select “Choose Virtual Optical Disk File”.

  21. Select the downloaded .iso-file of the GSM TRIAL.

  22. Click “OK”.

  23. Start the created virtual machine.

  24. Select “Setup” and press Enter.

  25. Confirm the displayed message by pressing Enter.


    → The installation process is started.

  26. Enter a user name and press Enter.

  27. Enter a password and press Enter.

    Note: A strong password should be chosen, and the login data should be stored in a secure place. If the login information is lost, the GSM TRIAL will not be accessible and has to be reinstalled.

  28. Confirm the displayed message by pressing Enter.

    → The GSM reboots twice. Do not try to log in after the first reboot!

  29. As soon as the login message “Welcome to Greenbone OS” is shown, log in using the previously created user name and password.

  30. Perform the general system setup as described here.

Additional Notes

  • During the installation, a self-signed TLS certificate is created. When logging in to the web interface, the web browser will regard it as insecure. Tell the web browser to accept it as an exception.
  • Before the feed update is completed, not all SecInfo is available and scans are not possible.
  • Shutting down or rebooting the virtual machine should only be done by selecting “Maintenance > Power” in the GOS administration menu to ensure that important system processes, e.g., the feed update, are not interrupted.

The Feed and Greenbone OS consists of various components with various Copyrights and (Open Source) Licenses. In essence the product can be used for any purpose but for re-distribution the conditions of the licenses have to be considered. Details are summarized in the License Information .
