Use openvas-scanner independently

Can I use openvas-scanner independently?
My scenario is where I want to scan a Linux machine for vulns, I wonder if I can just build the openvas-scanner locally on the Linux machine, update the VTs and execute a local scan to check for Vulns?
is it possible?
